About

Delve into the fantastically obscure artwork of Jack Blackburn and find out more about his creative process, inspirations and his background.

How would you describe your art?

My main description is that it is art about other art. It’s genuinely what it’s about. It’s literally about paintings. All of my art references some other art or makes a point about art or how we paint or whatever it is. I do acrylic paintings.

Your art is loud and colourful. What drew you to the style?

The colours are a way of showing something different. I use colours that aren’t traditionally used in portraiture. Trying to get away from that same old brown English painting. I’m inspired by Mexican and indigenous paintings from around the world as well as modern art. I’m an old punk rocker. People think of punk rock as people with black clothes but when it came out it was about bright colours, yellows and neon greens. We were very colourful people at the start.

What is your background?

I never went to art school, I come from the other side of the tracks. I have always been involved in art whether it was comics, fanzines, drawings. Over the years, I have done various things like collages. I used to do huge abstract paintings for fifteen years but then moved onto figurative art. I have all of these ideas on postmodernism etc and when I was doing abstract art, no one understood that. I had a massive theory on layers but it never found an audience.

How long does it take you to finish your artwork?

About a week. It can take longer. I can do them quicker as well. I do some drawings too which can take a day or a few hours.
